From the back of my car, a little pick up & delivery tack repair service has evolved into a full service tack repair & retail business.
In 2008 Lorrie Sullivan started Horse Sense Plus offering saddle repair, tack repair, blanket washing and repair services. This was a pick and delivery service that was run from the back of her suburban and her small shop at home. Lorrie drove around Aiken visiting her equestrian friends and met lots of new friends along the way. She would visit farms and literally just knock on doors to hand out flyers. HSP also made handcrafted leather goods for horses and dogs as well as belts for their owners. Our custom halters, dog collars and leather leashes were sold in numerous tack and feed stores in town. Eventually Lorrie was approached by clients wanting her to help them sell their used tack and equipment... fast forward about a year and Sullivan Saddlery was born.
We started out in our shop at home, a 24x36 workshop where we did all of our tack repair. In the front we dedicated some space to our new "store" we sold items on eBay and shoppers visited the store by appointment. After attending the Audubon Fall Rally as a vendor in November 2012 we decided to find a location in town where we could establish the store and make a bigger presence. We started out in a little "house" on Richland Ave. just outside of downtown, which much to my surprise was just not big enough. We quickly outgrew the space within the first 6 months. We moved nearly a year later into a slightly larger space owned by the same gentlemen whom we rented from to help with our growing needs. That space just across the street was also not sufficient. We were growing rapidly and it became overwhelming to work in the building. It was evident that shopping was becoming less enjoyable as well, especially on rainy days!
It was a very difficult decision to make, but there are always risks with big decisions. In May of 2014 we began the move to our new location. Located just 2 miles from the "old store" our new space provides ample room for items for sale as well as plenty of storage space and room to work in the back of the warehouse. We are greatful for these changes as it has allowed the store to grow even more. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful clientele that has stuck with us through all the struggles, many struggles not normal for a new business. We are just now getting on our feet - so to speak - as we continue to grow and serve our community with our knowledgable staff and vast array of inventory. Our new store features a 5,000 sq. ft. space located just off the 118 bypass on the North side of downtown Aiken. The retail area is 3 times the space we had in our previous location. We will now have the ability to maintain a receiving area for new inventory. Future plans also include a "bargain basement" area with merchandise that has been drastically reduced in price. Seasonal sales will also be added to our calendar. We now have all of our services under one roof! Our equipment for repairing tack and blankets are now a part of our new store, located in the back of the warehouse. We also have a dedicated and reliable local leather craftsman available for tack and equipment repair that we may call upon for assistance with big jobs.
We hope that you will come by and visit the new store!
